I've done a lot of traveling!
When I was 12, my father bought a big travel trailer and every imaginable piece of equipment one might need. Tents, lanterns, stoves, canoe, you name it! Off we went!~Leaving Louisiana, meandering northeast, up through the U.S. and into Canada. We then went ALLLLLLLLLL the way across Canada to British Columbia. Then, back down into Washington, Oregon, meandering again back down towards home. We ONLY stayed at National and State Parks, unless nothing was available. I suppose now he'd get in trouble for taking us out of school early for an extended summer trip, which lasted into the fall. It was the best learning experience he could have given us.
I remember seeing the SEE ROCK CITY barns each year, when we took our annual vacation from Louisiana to Tennessee, N.Carolina, Virginia, etc. We'd all load up in our suburban and head out. Still, these memories are so clear of the barns, painted with signs... It seems that I'm not the only one who has these memories. Click here: http://www.randesignscustomjewelry.com/history.html
I was reminded of those times today, when I watched this video. So, I wanted to share this with you. Marie, the recent winner of the Cumberland Island book, sent it to me. Thank you Marie!
I'm going to paint one for our barn here on Cumberland Island! Now, which block should I choose?

That's neat about all your travels. We have traveled a lot too and with kids in tow! Our travels have consisted of mainly moves. We lived from Florida to Alaska and just about everywhere in between! We also have traveled all across Canada.
Thank you so much for sharing these links with us. I love to see barns painted with quilt blocks on them. Do you have Eleanor Burns newer book 'Quilted Blocks on American Barns'? Pretty neat.
The book 'The Barn Painter' looks like a good read.
Hugs!
We used to drive to Sydney each year to visit my grandparents, and l can remember how frustrated we would be when mum and dad would have to have just one last cuppa before leaving, when we just wanted to go!! It was a 12 hour drive, and we would always leave about 8pm at night and drive through, arriving in the morning, usually surprising my grandparent's. All the luggage was loaded in the back, and with 6 kids, we would take it in turns to sleep on top of the luggage, looking out the back window, till we fell asleep. Of course those were the days before seat belts.
l have been collecting photos of barn quilts for years, so will check out these new links, thanks so much. l must also paint one for my barn!!! Something with flying geese, as its our symbol.
Those quilt blocks on the barns fascinate me, so I made a 2' square one for my back deck! Used the tipsy log cabin. Let me know if you want to see a photo and I'll send it to you. Lucky that you got to travel so much!
Great video, thanks for sharing! Love the barn quilts, the granddaughters and I did some blocks for our 'shed' a couple of years ago, see here. Have a great day!
you had good times on that trip and seen a lot of things I know - doing the same thing now. We are lucky when we get to travel.

That video was so cool! Adams County, Ohio is not far from me! Who knew? :o) I think I'm going to have to go over to Kentucky and see if I can find that Bluebird Barn!
How great that your dad took you all traveling during the summer. I think that's fantastic...we never even went on vacations! :o( But I think it is one of the best experiences for kids - and adults - to travel and see our country. There is still so much I want to see!
Thanks for sharing, Sandra!
XOXO,
Cyndi
Thanks for the lovely story
Thanks so much for the trips today!! Great video! These barns brighten the day when you pass them! Sorry to say we don't have them here! happy quilting, hugs, Daniëlle
Another island dweller! My husband and I live on the northern part of Vancouver Island, way across the continent from you. We aren't as cut off as you seem to be but our village has one store and there is one gas station up at the highway junction - well, two lane mountain road is what it really is, and treacherous in winter. We are up on the lower slope of Mt. H'Kusam with our four dogs and a big garden,...and the dream art studio I built a couple of years go. I have done a bit of quilting and other fibre arts but mainly am a figurative painter. I think we are both so fortunate to be living in such little paradises!
I am from Ohio and we do have some cool barn paintings here. I also like how the old barns often have the year they were built in contrasting shingles on the roof. However, my boss wanted a chewing tobacco sign painted on his barn in remembrance of a barn he knew as a child and he was told he wasn't allowed to do it because it is a tobacco product.
Those barn paintings are really something! I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like them.
I, too, have wonderful memories of family treks across the continent with my parents - in a 1962 Rambler American!
Where in Louisiana did you live? I grew up in Lafayette. My husband is from Pointe Coupe parish.
Sandra,
Thank you for sharing the smileboxes. INCREDIBLE! I have been following a blogger who does free pattern downloads and pictures of the barns that inspired them. Her name is Jen and you can find her Wisconsin quilt barn photos at http://cre8tivequilter.blogspot.com/
Happy Quilting!
