I'm actually more afraid of fires on our island, than I am of hurricanes. This photo was taken at our beach road, Little Greyfield Beach Road (click on map to left).
I just walked in the door from taking these photos. Now, it might not look like a big fire. However, all fires begin as small fires....
I took this photo to give you a better idea of it's location. This is Stafford beach crossing, the next one up from the campground and the road where the Stafford Beach House is located.
I am a State Certified Volunteer Fire Fighter on Cumberland Island.
When I saw this vehicle coming from afar, I thought it was firefighters, but it turned out to be Greyfield Inn, conducting their tours on the beach. They go up the main road, to the north end, then come back along the beach with paying guests. This fall, the CINS (Cumberland Island National Seashore) will conduct these tours, but will not drive on the beach. We have long been a huge advocate for MORE access to the north end and other parts of the island, which is not easily accessible to the public. The island is around 18 miles long and you are dropped off at the south end. So, this is great news! The park will take you to Stafford Chimney area, which is private, then up to the old wharf, over to the Church, out to the beach for a picnic lunch and then back down the main road to catch the ferry. Wonderful news as far as we are concerned. America's National Seashore should be affordable and accessible to ALL, not just the elite and rich who can afford the extremely high rates to stay at the Greyfield Inn, the only commercial operation here. I think their cheapest room is around 500.00, but that's sharing a bath.
So, I'll let keep you updated on the fires. We are big advocates of dumping water via helicopter on fires to put them out. This is not very popular with the extreme environmentalists, but a fire could wipe out all the HUGE oak trees, flora and fauna, historic structures that are left, not to mention our homes. This is nature taking it's course in their eyes and it's all non indigenous, so it doesn't matter...
As you can imagine, we have trouble getting insurance here with NO fire dept. What little bit we have is VERY expensive. So, any fire here gets our attention! Grover has a few fire stories from the 70's, when he lived on the north end in front of the church and many throughout our years here.

Oh wow. I hope that fire stays small and doesn't harm anything.
You know... you could easily start your own volunteer fire department. I know in Vermont all you need is a Engine with a pumper on it. You can buy those really cheap from other departments looking to sell them for around 20-30k (new engines cost over half a million). Just having the engine will decrease your ISO rating (insurance rating for fire protection) and save everyone on the Island money.
Sandy, a fire on island is horrible. Hope they get it under control fast, all those beautiful old oak trees, something are not replaceable. I love your pictures..I was looking again at the beautiful pictures from last night's sunset, is that a tractor I see in one of them on the beach???
I hope that every one is ok I was once in the Debary volunteer fire department I which that you and Gover had a big water pump so you can pertack your house from fire get a big water pump and two hoses about teo or three inces in diameture long enofe to go to the rivre then tthe other one from the pump by your housethat way you can save your housefrom fire love you both
That is just horrible!! I hope that little fire doesn't become bigger...and I say dump away!! Get it out!! Stay safe!

We have an 800 ft. well and we purchased a fire hose for our house. So, I will always start hosing down the house and doing what we can here.
The County gave us(Vol. Fire Dept here) a firetruck back when our old Superintenant was here and he organized the whole vol. dept., we took classes, became certified. However, it's all sort of gone by the wayside while the park has fired that person and now nothing is being done or organized... It did NOT lower or insurance at bit, but we are in an unusual situation with being on this island.
But, I will do what I can on my end and know where the truck is and we will do what we can. I'm sure it will be fine, but never can have enough drills or awareness!~
I sure hope there was no damage done, what started this fire did you learn? Hope all is well this is such a wonderful place I would hate to see any of it burned out, hugs my friend, have a very blessed day.
I have been catching up on your beautiful photos!
I hope the fire doesn't pose any problems for you.
Love the photo of your sewing room/studio - lots of creativity happening!
Public access makes people more aware of their heritage. More of it I say. Controled of course.
Dumping water is often the only way to get to fires here. Australia borrowed a helicopter from the States and now ha sone of their own. VFD is hard but in lots of areas the only way.
Hope all is well
We live in fear of fire here, as well. We have a volunteer fire department - amazing people - but with no hydrants we have to depend on our one pumper truck. We have a wonderfully deep well, but if a fire takes out the power we are helpless to protect our house as the well needs electricity to pump. Last year we put a steel roof on the house - a little extra insurance.
I hope everything is ok.
I have a huge fear of fires!! Gald to hear that was a small one, hopefully there will be no large ones.
Oh my! Do you know what started it? Glad everyone is OK!
Thinking of you!
Keeping you in our prayers.
Fires are very dangerous beings indeed. We get our fair share of bushfires here in Australia and coincidentally the report from the Royal Commission was released here today regarding our Black Saturday fires 18 months ago. 173 people lost their lives on that day and it was the worst natural disaster in Australia's history. Stinking hot days and northerly winds are deadly here. I will be thinking of you and hope that fire gets put out ASAP!
Fire is also my worst fear, hope it's kept under control & put out soon, thinking of you xox
Oh, how scary this is! I hope all is better. I also hope your visit with your daughter and grandson is marvelous!
I do hope that fire is history now.
