Figs

I love figs. This tree was planted in our backyard about 14 years ago. For the last few days, I've gathered what I could reach, saving them to make fig preserves.
I reached as high as I could and bent the very pliable branches, so that I could pick them.
Then, from my studio, I've watched the squirrels and birds have a feast! The squirrels would carefully pick one and NOT devour it. They would scurry from one oak, to another, through the labyrinth of branches, until they found the perfect spot. Then, they would sit and feast on their one, carefully chosen morsel.  When this tree was smaller, I'd put a net over it, in an effort to protect the fruit.  It's entirely too tall now and I don't mind sharing.
As a child, I was a spider monkey, very tall and thin. I would be the one to climb up the fig tree to pick what I could, then bend down the branches for my father to reach.  I remember both my grandmothers and great grandmothers, making fig preserves and serving them with hot biscuits and butter. I love how such simple foods can evoke wonderful memories. Even the thought of them...

I wanted to show you this quilt. I love it! It's in the newest Pottery Barn catalogue (No, no paying endorsements here!). The original is housed in the American Folk Art Museum in New York.  It was made near Philadelphia around 1835 of approx. 2,900 pieces.  There are also others, including Gee's Bend reproduction quilts. No mention of where these reproductions are made in the catalogue.... but, you know me, I called.  Yes, China.  Supposedly, these are all paper pieced and quilted by hand. When I inquired about the backing fabric, I was simply told that it is a floral. Regardless, they are inspirational to look at and there's a video about how they "re-created" these (Which still does not mention China!).

I'm not a lover of figs myself but I can certainly relate to sharing with our feathered and furry friends.
Despite my best efforts, once again this year, the birds got most of our cherries.

I don't know why we haven't planted any figs yet. My grandfather had a couple of trees in his backyard and I miss them!

The only fig I have ever tasted would have to be in a Fig Newton. Sad, huh? I would love to try a fresh one, but they never appear in the grocery store. I'm so happy to hear that you don't begrudge the critters a bit of your bounty. Michele

Mmmmm - fig preserves and cheese on a fresh scone.
Of course they don't advertise that the quilts are made in China - it sort of takes away from the whole fake folksy thing going on at Pottery Barn.

I can wake up my husband in the middle of the night for fig preserves hihi! I'm a fan also but I need my rest hihi!! So nice of you to share with the squirrels! Well, the photo is still nice to see despite.... bet they finished it sooner than us doing it by hand! Happy quilting, any progress made? Hugs, Daniëlle

Oh Sandra, thanks for the wonderful walk down memory lane for me! My grandma used to make fig preserves every year. We'd all go pick the figs at my great aunt's house and then when maw-maw was cooking them for the preserves, she'd give us a nice bowl of hot figs to "sample". We also ate the preserves with her big "cat head" biscuits and butter. Sigh...love those memories!

That quilt does look pretty, but it's so sad that almost everything we buy here now comes from China!

XOXO,

Cyndi

The figs sound tasty. I have never actually tasted a fresh one. All we can get around here are dried ones.

Sandra,
Two huge fig tress came with this house. And although I do not eat them, I have canned about 1 1/2 dozen jars for my hubby this fig season. This is my first experience at canning- can you believe? We leave the figs in the higher branches to those persistent birds! I use Paul Prudhomme's recipe for the preserves, which is very simple.
I check in on your blog almost everyday- love reading it!
Sending you hugs and Louisiana sunshine : )

Hi Sandra
First morning as Grama Morning TV is on and I'm sneaking a few minutes befor the the day starts.

I enjoyed seeing you at Valintina's how is the eye spy going.

We inhereted a fig tree in a previouss house. The first fruit of the year was so large the small birds would eat their way inside and contine munching from the inside out. The second round usually came at high summer with temps over 100F and dry winds. DH made frames covered with screen. We washed sliced and set the fig slices to dry. Fig chips were the result. Great for school lunches. Enjoy the preserves.

Good Luck with the cleaning but remember Eathan doesn't care. Save time to enjoy your daughter as well.
Hugs Terry

What a lovely memories you have of figs, Sandra! I live in fig-country now and have slowly learned to appreciate them. I have found one variety that makes me loose all decorum! And that's the tree I will plant when I finally have a garden!
I am so intrigued at your fig preserves. I have no idea what it would taste like. maybe you can share?

I heart Pottery Barn alo! If they would have done the Denyse Schmidt quilts in Flea Market Fancy, I would have been all over it.

You are going well with your hexagons! I think that I have done 19 flowers this summer. Some progress is good.

I hope that you hubby is feeling better. You guys will be in my thoughts!

XOXO,
Stefanie
